“Success is not the work of one, but the work of many”
Ngāti Porou, Te Whanau a Apanui
Jade has a demonstratable passion for her chosen field and proactively prepared to achieve her goal. In year 11, she attended a BEAMS workshop with the University of Auckland (a one day introduction for Māori and Pacific students to learn about opportunities in business, architecture, engineering, medicine and science). In Year 12, she received a scholarship to Hands On Otago, attended a Kia Ora Hauora workshop at Hauora Tairāwhiti, and received a place on the Whakapiki Ake Programme at the University of Auckland. In year 13, she received a place at the MacDiamid Institute Discovery Camp at Victoria University, and more. She was an active volunteer in a number of campaigns during high-school, and was an academic mentor for year 13 numeracy. Jade has been working two jobs, day and night, to save for her studies. The medical degree is a minimum 6-year commitment for Jade. Mātai plans to continue alongside her throughout this time to support her journey, with mentorship and summer internship opportunities. We believe she will be an awesome ambassador for the youth of our community, and help inspire more of our tamariki to aspire to high level professions, and to make a difference for the next generation.
Mātai is a registered Charitable Trust (CC56831) undertaking not-for-profit medical imaging research in Tairāwhiti, Aotearoa.
