“Success is not the work of one, but the work of many”

Jakob Teneti

2022 Intern

Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Ngāti Porou

Jakob Teneti is a medical student at the University of Auckland. He is currently preparing to re-enter the medical programme in 2023 after deferring his studies over the past two years, during which he came home to Tairāwhiti and reconnected with his whānau and community. He believes that the Mātai internship will provide an opportunity to help build his confidence and reintroduce himself to the health sector. Additionally, Jakob wishes to engage in Kaupapa Māori where he hopes to learn new skills that will empower him to become a more culturally competent doctor. Ultimately, his goal is to return home after his degree and serve his community as either a General Practitioner or a Paediatrician. He therefore feels that the Mātai internship programme is a meaningful way to integrate himself in the community and develop important leadership and communication skills that will serve him as a future doctor to make a meaningful difference in his community.
