Gisborne Girls’ High School
Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Double majoring in Human Genetics and Molecular Pathology
Keeley Cairns has completed her Bachelor of Biomedical Science, majoring in Human Genetics and Molecular Pathology, and will begin a clinically focused Master’s programme in 2026. While her academic background has centred on understanding the molecular and genetic foundations of human health, her experience at Mātai last year highlighted the importance of community connection and the real-world impact of healthcare.
Inspired by the human side of research and the value of contributing to people’s wellbeing in a more direct way, Keeley is excited to return to Mātai. For her, this internship is an opportunity to build practical skills, deepen her understanding of health in a community context, and give back to Tairāwhiti. She hopes to integrate her scientific training with meaningful, hands-on work that supports better health outcomes for the community.
Mātai is a registered Charitable Trust (CC56831) undertaking not-for-profit medical imaging research in Gisborne-Tairāwhiti, Aotearoa-New Zealand.
