Summer Internships

We would sincerely like to thank our supporters to date for this year’s programme:

The Hugh Green Foundation, The University of Canterbury, QUEST Trust, Pultron Composites Ltd, Rapanui Trust, The Gisborne Lions Club Host and Gisborne Wainui Lions Club, The Woolf Fisher Trust, The Freemasons Foundation, and The Tindall Foundation.

Selected interns are typically enrolled in health science, computer science, medical, or engineering programmes at a New Zealand university and are from Tairāwhiti or have strong ties to the region.

The ten-week summer internship programme provides students with the opportunity to be involved with cutting-edge projects, working alongside a team of expert scientists, clinicians, research staff, PhD students, and Iwi health providers. A stipend of $6,500 will be provided over the ten-week period.

Mātai will aim to align the interns with their choice of research projects that closely fit their skill-set and interests, and that will empower the students to make a difference in the community. This will help Mātai develop stronger links in the community through the work that they do, and then in their future careers.

Workshops and sessions will be given with top researchers, ranging from research design, medical imaging, bioengineering tools, ethics, Mātauranga Māori, community engagement, data management, and how to work with computers.

The students are given the tools to help build their confidence as future leaders and role models. This includes leadership, science communication sessions, and opportunities to be involved with the media.

Attitude, reliability, commitment, and teamwork are crucial components of the Mātai Summer Internship programme. Due to the programme’s high demand and the significant time and investment required from others, we select applicants who can demonstrate these competencies. Please provide examples from your past experiences that showcase these qualities when answering the following questions.
