The Mātai School Leavers Scholarship provides support to New Zealand’s future innovators in medical research and technology.
This scholarship is open to secondary school students in their final year of school, who are looking to pursue tertiary studies in bioengineering, medical imaging, medical physics, computer science, or health and medical sciences in 2027. Priority is given to students from the Tairāwhiti region.
The scholarship offers financial assistance to help support the student’s undergraduate studies.

The annual scholarship programme aims to inspire Tairāwhiti youth to undertake medical and science careers.
Thanks to our incredible supporters, this year Mātai has been able to offer 17 scholarships to Tairāwhiti secondary school graduates seeking tertiary education.

Tyla’s journey with us began in 2022 as a recipient of the Mātai-Holdsworth Scholarship, and we are proud to now be welcoming her back into the Mātai whānau as part of our growing MRI workforce. Tyla (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Arawa, and Te Whakatōhea) will join the Mātai team on 11 May, 2026 as a Trainee MRI Medical Imaging Technologist.
