Scholarships

The annual scholarship programme aims to inspire Tairāwhiti youth to undertake medical and science careers.

Scholarships offer financial assistance to support student undergraduate studies and are open to Tairāwhiti secondary school students in their final year of school, who are looking to pursue tertiary studies in bioengineering, medical imaging, medical physics, computer science, or health and medical sciences in 2027.

Summer Internships

The ten-week summer internship programme provides students with the opportunity to be involved with cutting-edge projects, working alongside a team of expert scientists, clinicians, research staff, PhD students, and Iwi health providers.

Workshops and sessions range from research design, medical imaging, bioengineering tools, ethics, Mātauranga Māori, community engagement, and data management.

Students are given the tools to help build their confidence as future leaders and role models.

PhD Candidates

PhD candidates are crucial to supporting research projects. Mātai partners with universities to support PhD students who are based onsite in Tairāwhiti or involved through national and international research collaborations. These students contribute directly to advancing innovative MRI technologies, data analysis, and clinical research, while gaining hands-on experience within a world-class interdisciplinary research environment.
