PI – Artificial Intelligence in Neuroimaging Analysis, Mātai Medical Research Institute
Associate Professor Alan Wang is a biomedical imaging and artificial intelligence researcher specialising in computational radiology and intelligent medical informatics. His research focuses on developing advanced methods for analysing medical imaging data, particularly multimodal brain MRI, using statistical learning, machine learning and deep learning.
Alan has expertise across tissue segmentation, lesion detection, brain-function localisation, white-matter fibre mapping, structural and functional connectivity, and volumetric and surface-based brain analysis. He works with large clinical imaging datasets to identify imaging biomarkers that can improve the early diagnosis, understanding and treatment of neurological and neurodegenerative conditions.
His research sits at the intersection of medical imaging, bioengineering and clinical neuroscience. Through collaborations spanning the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Auckland Bioengineering Institute, Centre for Brain Research and Mātai, Alan contributes to research in traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurodegeneration, cancer imaging and artificial intelligence–assisted diagnosis. He is also actively involved in postgraduate research training and the supervision of students working across biomedical imaging, informatics and healthcare AI.
