About

MB, ChB, Dip Obstetrics, FRANZCP, MANPA

Dr Gil Newburn is a neuropsychiatrist with a clinical interest in all aspects of brain/behaviour correlations. His main interest is in issues arising from brain injury, including altered behaviour, cognition, emotional and social function, after damage to the brain, including how our brains react to, and change with, stressors.

There is a broad range of clinical issues, including attentional disorders, problems with social cognition, which may defy formal medical diagnosis as it is currently understood, but which reflect alterations to brain function, affecting cognition, behaviour, emotional and social function, and the person’s capacity to interact with their world in a way that maximises control over their lives. Dr Newburn believes that no single clinical discipline can address these issues, and research and subsequent clinical intervention must be multidisciplinary. He also takes the approach that the individual and their whanau are core members of this team, and that the treatment process should occur in a world view that matches their beliefs.
