Tyla graduated from UCOL in 2025 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Imaging Technology). She gained clinical experience at Gisborne Hospital, working in the radiology department throughout her studies as a student and as a newly qualified radiographer.
Having grown up here in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa, it has been especially meaningful for Tyla to not only begin her career in her hometown, but also continue developing her skills here through her MRI training at Mātai. She previously received the Mātai–Holdsworth Scholarship in 2022 while in her final year at Gisborne Girls’ High School, making her journey with Mātai feel like a full-circle moment. She is now completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences in MRI through the University of Auckland alongside her clinical training.
As a young Māori wahine, Tyla is passionate about giving back to her whānau and the community that has supported her throughout her journey. She hopes to contribute to better health outcomes for the people of Tairāwhiti and inspire other rangatahi Māori to see themselves in careers in health. For Tyla, being able to learn, grow and build her career here in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa is something she feels incredibly grateful for.
